It is hard to find the time and money in college to relax and enjoy yourself even when the opportunity presents itself in postponed submission dates and unexpected holidays, your wallet might disagree with you. Although money spent relaxing is money well spent, its easier said than done when mom’s birthday is coming up and you want to gift her something special.

If you live in Chennai, you’re in luck. We’ve rounded up 5 fun activities that won’t burn a hole in your pocket.

1. Marina Beach

Price: ₹20 (Lighthouse Entry Fee)
No Chennai-based list or conversation is complete without mentioning Marina Beach! If you grew up in the city, it’s a great way to revisit your childhood. Letting the waves play with your toes while you enjoy your favourite Kwality Walls ice cream… just the thought of it makes me happy. If you didn’t spend your childhood here, you get to experience it all for the first time. Lucky you! You can play carnival games like shooting balloons or take advantage of the second longest beach in the world and walk around. Be careful though, it is not advisable to walk here without your footwear. If the beach sand isn’t your style, climb up to the lighthouse and see a side of Chennai you don’t want to miss out on!

2. Sathyam Cinemas Wednesday DND

Price: ₹63.34/ ₹165.47

Is the midweek slump getting to you? Wednesday’s are the absolute worst. It’s been too long since the last weekend and it’s too far from the next one. Let the Wednesday woes melt away with Sathyam’s signature popcorn and cold coffee. Try out their DND (Do Not Disturb) shows available only on Wednesdays. This some serious business though. Your phones have to be on silent, you can’t be late, no crying babies and definitely no loud talkers. Just make sure you know the rules and don’t end up being the troublemaker. For the ultimate movie lovers, this is as close as it gets to your personal Netflix sessions on the big screen.

3. Wild Tribe Ranch

Price: Varies based on activity

This place on ECR is filled with fun but requires some amount of physical exertion on your part. From Obstacle courses to ATVs, this one may sway in and out of ‘budget-friendly’ territory depending on the activity you choose. The great part? The more the merrier! They have group bookings that can significantly reduce the entry fee. Definitely worth a visit considering their website lists ‘Bungee Football’ as one of the activities!

4. Surfing at Kovalam/Covelong

Price: varies based on activity

Over the last few years, Kovalam beach has been hosting surf fests and other fun activities. During their fests, the beach comes alive with food stalls, surf lessons and even yoga sessions on the beach! It’s a great place to spend the day even off-season, by yourself or with a couple of friends. Learn how to surf, explore the place or have a quiet ‘away from the city’ day. No matter what you pick, a day far away from your textbooks nonetheless.

5. Dakshinachitra

Price: ₹50 (for Students)

If you love revisiting history and experiencing a little piece of it, take a day to explore this beautiful place. With various types of recreated South Indian houses, artisanal works and handicrafts, you even get to take a piece of it home. Whether you take part in their workshops or idly wander,  be warned they close at sunset, which makes October – February the ideal time to visit, as you will be walking under the sun quite a bit.
