The Birla Institute of Technology & Science, which is famous by the name as BITS Pilani is an all India Institute for Higher Education. The Institute is a dream come true of its founder Late Mr GD Birla, an eminent industrialist, a participant in the Indian freedom struggle and a close associate of the Father of Indian National Late Mr Mahatma Gandhi. It has started in the early 1900s as a small school, blossomed into a set of colleges for the higher education which ranges from the Humanities to Engineering until 1964 when all these colleges come together to culminate into a unique Indian University of International standing. This university was christened as the Birla Institute of technology and Science, Pilani, which is famous by the name as BITS, Pilani.

BITS Pilani is located at around 220 kilometres west of Delhi and 215 Kilometers North of Jaipur. The BITS campus is situated in the south of the bus stand. The area of the campus which even includes the Birla Education Trust is spread in an area of around 990 acres; its developed area is 50 acres of which 15 acres are used for the BITS building. The campus has around 11500 sq. Mt of classrooms and 7200 sq. mt of laboratories. The railway station nearest to the campus is Chirawa Railway Station which is located at a distance of around 15 km from the campus.

BITS also have a Birla Mandir that has a dedicated goddess Saraswati, Sharda Peeth built by the GD Birla. The white marble temple is built on a 7-foot high foundation with 80 pillars for support. It covers an area of 26000 square feet.

The BITS Pilani campus has India first technological museum, the Birla Museum. It is built in the year 1954 that showcases technological advancements. BITS have a 2560 square meters auditorium decorated with paintings by the students from the department of decoration and art.

Pilani is located within the three hours of travel distance from popular tourists’ spots of Rajasthan, Alwar, Bikaner, Sikar, Abhisari and more. Facilities Available at BITS Pilani

The BITS Pilani campus provides all the modern recreational and academic facilities to its students. The campus is replete with the state of art infrastructure which includes amenities such as the labs, gymnasium, sports complex, etc.

BITS Pilani Institute is fully residential, and hostel accommodation is provided to all students. The institute has eleven hostels for boys and one hostel complex for the girl’s students. The hostel rooms are fully furnished with common room facilities like cable TV; telephone facilities are available in each and every hostel room. All hostel room is equipped with internet connectivity, and heating geyser is provided in all hostels. There is a common kitchen cum mess unit for each and every set of two boy’s hostel. There is a separate mess for the Girls hostel which is situated within the boundary of the hostel. It is compulsory for the students staying in the hostel to have their food in the hostel mess only. The messes are attached to the hostels which are fully managed by the students.

Admission Process

Since the year 2005, the admission process to the BITS has been offered based on the performance of the students on the All India Entrance Examination, the BITS Admission Test. The test, for which applications are submitted in the month of December, is conducted online in May and June in all cities over entire India. The exam tests the candidate’s analytical, knowledge, and reasoning abilities in physics, chemistry, mathematics, English and logical reasoning, and is based on the higher secondary curriculum in India and abroad.

To be eligible for the admissions, students are required to obtain a minimum average grade of 75% in mathematics, chemistry, and physics with a minimum grade of 60% in each subject in their higher secondary examination. Since 2011, the number of applicants for the BITSAT has been increasing at a very faster pace from 123000 in 2011 to 250000 in 2019.
